In this project, we turned an early 19th-century panorama into a digital exploration of historical Istanbul.
“On the Spot: Panoramic Gaze on Istanbul”, which we prepared for the Pera Museum, we digitally reconstructed the 360-degree view of Istanbul that Henry Aston Barker drew from Galata Tower in the early 19th century. Viewers are invited to step inside the panorama and take a journey through Istanbul as it once was.
We brought together the original segments of the painting and modeled all the structures and topography in Blender. Colors, surfaces, and drawn textures were applied using projection mapping, staying fully faithful to the original work.
Accurately positioning the map and modeling each building according to the visual logic of the era required a intensive process of discipline and production.
With this film, we aimed for viewers not only to step into a nostalgic version of Istanbul but also to enter a period of time they may have never experienced before.
The ambient sounds we used supported this feeling, enhancing the viewing experience.
Ultimately, it became an experience that connects with historical reference and visual art.
BACK
STAGE
We combined the segments of the original panorama, then modeled and textured each element in 3D to match Barker’s vision.
Behind the scenes, you can see how the historical painting was brought to life as an explorable environment.
